1191 — First Battle of Tarain
First Battle of Tarain, also known as the First Battle of Taraori, was fought on 14 January 1191 between the Ghurid forces led by Muhammad of Ghor and the Rajput Confederacy led by Prithviraj Chauhan, near Tarain (modern Taraori in Haryana, India). The battle ended in a victory for the Rajputs; however, Muhammad of Ghor managed to escape and returned to Ghazni.

1761 — Third Battle of Panipat
The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14 January 1761, at Panipat, about 60 miles (97 km) north of Delhi between a northern expeditionary force of the Maratha Empire and the invading forces of the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, supported by two Indian allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab, and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh. Militarily, the battle pitted the French origin artillery and cavalry of the Marathas against the heavy cavalry and mounted artillery (zamburak and jizail) of the Afghans and Rohillas led by Ahmad Shah Abdali and Najib-ud-Daulah, both ethnic Afghans (the former is also known as Ahmad Shah Durrani).

1797 — Battle of Rivoli
The Battle of Rivoli (14–15 January 1797) was a key victory in the French campaign in Italy against Austria. Napoleon Bonaparte's 23,000 Frenchmen defeated an attack of 28,000 Austrians under Feldzeugmeister Jozsef Alvinczi, ending Austria's fourth and final attempt to relieve the Siege of Mantua. Rivoli further demonstrated Napoleon's brilliance as a military commander and led to French occupation of northern Italy.

The 1802 United States Senate special election in Delaware was held on January 14, 1802. Senator Henry Latimer had resigned after becoming unhappy over the tactics of his political opponents who were still bitter over the circumstances of the contested election in 1792. Samuel White defeated Archibald Alexander, who had previously failed to win gubernatorial and House elections, by 10 votes.

1907 — An earthquake devastates Kingston, Jamaica
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Jamaica's capital, Kingston, on the afternoon of January 14. Strong shaking and fires devastated the city; the article reports that every building was damaged and that roughly 1,000 people died. Fires spread for hours before effective efforts to contain them could begin. A tsunami was also reported along Jamaica's north coast. The disaster caused extensive property losses and remains one of the Caribbean's most destructive recorded earthquakes. 1942 — Operation Postmaster
Operation Postmaster was a British special operation conducted on the Spanish island of Fernando Po, now known as Bioko, off West Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, during the Second World War. The mission was carried out by the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in January 1942. Their objective was to board the Italian and German ships in the harbour and sail them to Lagos. The SSRF under the command of Major Gus March-Phillipps left Britain in August 1941 and sailed the Brixham trawler, Maid Honor, to the Spanish colony.

1943 — Allied leaders begin the Casablanca Conference
The Casablanca Conference opened in French Morocco on January 14, bringing US president Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill together with their military staffs. The leaders discussed Allied strategy for the next phase of World War II. Their decisions included plans for operations in Sicily and Italy, a stronger bombing campaign against Germany and advances across the Pacific. The conference also produced a public commitment to seek the Axis powers' unconditional surrender. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin did not attend. The meeting continued until January 24, making this anniversary the start of the conference rather than the date of every decision.

Elections to the Kutch Electoral College took place in Kutch State, India, on January 14, 1952, which in turn elected one member of the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Parliament of India). 1969 — 1969 USS Enterprise fire
On January 14, 1969, a major fire and a series of explosions aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise off the coast of O'ahu, Hawaii, United States, led to the deaths of 28 sailors and injuries to 314 others. Additionally, 15 aircraft were destroyed in the incident. A Zuni rocket detonated under a plane's wing, causing a fire that touched off more munitions, blowing holes in the flight deck that allowed burning jet fuel to enter the ship. The cost of replacing the aircraft and repairing the ship cost over US$126 million (roughly $1 billion adjusted for inflation in 2022).
