What you can explore
Choose a month and day, including February 29, to read historical events in chronological order. The interactive explorer lets you filter by continent, country or territory, and event type. Today follows your device’s local calendar date.
We focus on historical events. The archive is not a birthday directory, a complete encyclopedia, or a claim that every event has been recorded. The coverage report shows the actual published totals and gaps.
Sources and editorial approach
Every published event links directly to a Wikipedia article. The collection combines individually edited summaries and clearly labeled excerpts from Wikipedia article leads. Excerpts use either a 2016 source snapshot or a recorded current revision, with permanent revision links and license information.
Automated checks compare dates with calendar statements or structured event records, examine the article identity and explicit geographic evidence, and screen duplicates. These checks are not independent corroboration or individual editorial review. Source errors and outdated wording can remain. Follow the current article and its references for further research.
Unpublished research leads remain visible in a separate research ledger. A collected lead is not a verified historical event. The ledger is excluded from search indexing.
Dates, countries, and disputed accounts
Historical dates follow the conventions of their cited sources. Relevant calendar differences or uncertain dates are noted rather than silently converted. Modern countries and territories are navigation labels, not assertions about historical sovereignty. Space events use an explicitly named launch or mission-control location.
When a source is disputed, use the linked references and primary material to assess its account. Coverage varies by place, period, language, and available sources.
Attribution and reuse
Wikipedia contributors retain credit for their text. Edited adaptations use CC BY-SA 4.0; excerpts retain the CC BY-SA version shown on each record. Older snapshot text was extracted through DBpedia. Some geographic lookups use GeoNames under CC BY 4.0. Preserve the relevant source, revision, and license when reusing content.
History by Date is independent of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation; neither endorses this archive.
